The best way to prevent your hair from smelling like cigarettes is to stop smoking. Although, for many people, this is easier said than done.

Fortunately, there are some techniques you can try to lessen the consequences. Be careful, these are only recommended for first and second hand smokers; they don’t work for third-hand smoke.

Wash your combs and brushes

If your hair smells of tobacco, this scent can be transferred to your combs and brushes, and then back to your hair, even after you’ve washed it. To prevent this from happening, wash your tools regularly with a small amount of shampoo and warm water.

Change your bedding regularly

The smell of smoke can be embedded in the sheets and pillowcases and, in this way, be transferred back to the hair. It is recommended to change the sheets every two weeks, but doing it more frequently will help reduce the problem.

smoke outside

If you have to smoke, do it outside. Open space and fresh air minimize the amount of smoke that sticks to clothing and hair.

Use an air purifier

Invest in an air purifier with a HEPA filter and make sure it’s working every time you light up a cigarette at home. Filter the air and reduce the amount of smoke you are exposed to.

cover your hair

Try to protect your hair every time you light a cigarette. You can use the hood of a jacket or a scarf to cover it; if you’re at home, wear a shower cap. This way, less smoke will be able to adhere to it.
